Understanding the VAT regime for self-employed professionals in Belgium

Mehdi Lamiri1 min read

VAT remains one of the most common sources of confusion for self-employed people just starting out. Here are the essential concepts to master from the first few months.

The tax exemption scheme

If your annual turnover stays below a certain threshold, you can opt for the tax exemption scheme: you don't charge VAT to your clients, but you also can't reclaim it on your purchases. This regime simplifies administration but isn't always the most financially advantageous.

The standard regime

Under the standard regime, you charge VAT to your clients and reclaim VAT paid on your business purchases. This is often preferable if your clients are themselves VAT-registered (B2B) or if you have significant investments to depreciate.

Filing frequency

  • Quarterly filing: the default regime for most small businesses
  • Monthly filing: mandatory above a certain turnover, or by voluntary election
  • Annual client listing, required every year regardless of the filing frequency chosen

The choice between these regimes depends on your client base, your cash flow, and your planned investments — a point to address right from the start of your business, not after the fact.
